AVT on the Fly
Now keep in mind this all comes from a non crafty mom. So almost all of our therapy is "on the fly" so to speak. I truely admire the AVT moms who homeschool or the just plain crafty AVT moms. . I just don't have those skills or patience I guess, but that's okay, because I have learned how to do AVT and get my floors done all at the same time. And yes, this is totally AVT. Brook loves to mop (and do other chores...can you believe it?) but I can say things like "mop in front of the heater first and then near the plant..." or even more sequencing by sweeping first, then mop each of the three rooms with tile in a particular order. Although we weren't doing any AVT while they were swimming yesterday, a water gun could also turn into a fun AVT style game. "spray something that starts with the /f/ sound"....or "spray something that is heavy...spray the garbage can once and the chair three times" I could go on for days here. And check out the kids at our therapy session yesterday at the park....So AVTs not that bad huh?
And if any of you AVT moms have figured out how to narrate instructions for the hearing dads, and actually have them follow your lead, do tell !! I'm just finding the AVT thing isn't working on the husbands....but will keep trying *grin*

13 days to go !!!
Only thirteen days til school starts! Do I sound excited? Well, let me just tell you what my children keep doing to amuse themselves. They walk past one another and pop the other's coils off! Oh man, you talk about annoying! Then they'll take off running(I see a 300.00 coil replacement in my future). My sister used to point her finger directly near my face and she convinced me that as long as she wasn't touching me, that she wasn't violating me (just my personal space). I can't imagine having all sound disconnected, especially if I was watching something good on tv.
Anyway, I also wanted to leave you with a video (hilarious) of Brook eating her first sandwich ( I know, I know, she's four!!! but has never liked the smell of loaf bread therefore has never even tasted it until today). Anyway, watch the last two seconds!
I hope that when I'm old, my kids don't put all my embarrassing moments on blogger!!

The Right Accessories
She can't keep her room clean but buy the girl some new school clothes and she'll stay in there for 30 minutes hanging everything "just so". She rearranged everything since Nanny (my mother) bought her some new school clothes. She took it literally when I asked her to hang EVERYTHING up. When she called me in to inspect her work, I noticed something blinking on the top row...it was one of her processors, her favorite accessory.
The Helper
So we are all outside and Brook announces she's going back home to get herself a popsicle. Gage says "hey, get me a red one" and her dad says "will you bring me just a plain water too?" So if you're counting that's at least four critical elements because we have various waters and crystal light options and many colors of popsicles, she announced she wanted pink (no surprise there). She walked about sixty yards back home and returned a couple of minutes later w/her popsicle and her dad's water. I told Gage, "oops, she forgot your popsicle, that was a lot to remember and a long distance to walk too". Brook looks up and says "no, I didn't forget, he can go get his own popsicle, I don't want to get his!!"

Play at the Park
This morning I decided while a movie was entertaining my kids (which is rare) I would try an online (free) course from the HOPE seminars...
http://www.audiologyonline.com/ceus/recordedcoursedetails.asp?class_id=11515
We play outside all day anyway and find loads of language opportunities but for some reason after listening to that, I got motivated to go to a different park and explore. Here are lots of pictures, lots of language opportunities, I assure you there was plenty of vocalization and we all had fun. You see the kids trying to peek into an old school from 1908, you see how high up we were and learned words like bluff and cliff. Luckily we are all scared of heights so none of us got too close to the edge!

Is Hamburger a Vegetable?
Okay, so tomorrow's lesson will include some categories!! Apparently we need a refresher course, which I've noted about a month ago, and I, being the summer slacker, haven't gotten around to it yet. Will do tomorrow! Enjoy this clip while we try to name some vegetables...remember she's 4.
the Unheard part 2
Okay, trying to keep up with Jodi here, and that's really hard to do. She has already offered me vice presidency of Josh's fan club (second place BEHIND her I'm sure *grin*) but now, the more I read, I understand why she said she didn't want to finish the book...she was just enjoying reading it that much. He is deaf and wears hearing aids and travels to Africa, looking for a place beyond his deafness. I'm only on page 25 because after every chapter (sometimes paragraph) I put it back down. Jodi and I are both mothers of deaf little boys who will no doubt grow up to be deaf young men like Josh. It honestly takes me a few minutes to fully absorb everything he says. If I keep reading w/out sitting back and thinking about it all, I may not fully appreciate everything he's written. I highly recommend this book and this summer it's my iced tea. I sit back, under the shade trees, watch my kids play, and drink one sip at a time, making sure I ingest every last drop!

They're Back!!
Her pink processors came back today, and WOW was she excited. She's been wearing her flesh colored back ups for about two weeks but the pink ones arrived this morning. Not only that, but they had labels on them stating which one was left and which one was right. Cochlear had them already mapped and ready to wear.
This was the second good news of the day, the first being that I found some double-sided tape. Brook would be okay if I had ran out of tape but not my Gage w/his tiny ears. He HAS to tape his processors on so we lucked up and found a pack after desperately searching. This just simply saved me a trip to town (20 min) w/my two kids, running to the sewing dept. of Wal Mart (which is near the toys) in hopes they had some in stock. We live in the country so no wig stores here, just Wal Mart. Some people use toupee tape if they have access to it.

the Police Again?
Okay, it's not an episode like last time! However this is what unfolded yesterday. I was inside working on some things and my husband was outside with the kids. Brook came running inside, very dramatic and out of breath exclaiming "Mama, the cops are at Nanna's...I don't know if they are takin' somebody to jail or not, Daddy and Gage are up there!" So I jump up, find the first pair of shoes I see and shove my feet inside and go running up thru the hay field that seperates our homes. Let me just say, these shoes were not made for a hay field but a white cop car in my in-laws driveway took my mind off of my feet. When I arrive the cop gets into his car and leaves and the two "boys" are back on the four wheelers heading home. So with no answers I march back down the hill in my elevated shoes where I finally get the answers. Now keep in mind, the in-laws were not home during all of this commotion. Gage and Brook had been swimming, so no processors/no hearing. Gage hops on his fourwheeler and drives up to Nanna's forgetting they are not home. My husband knew that Gage would just turn around and come back home when the child realized no one was home. This time however, my husband hears their house alarm going off, so paniced he jumps on the four wheeler and goes to see what has happened, fearing Gage has stumbled upon a break-in (their house has been broken into once before). What he finds instead is a confused little boy, who tells him that he saw a white truck going down the road. The police show up and take down the report and all is fine when they discover the alarm must have scared the burglars away if there were any. Gage holds firm that he didn't do it! I go back home, give Gage his ci and take him aside for a chat. "What happened buddy? You're not gonna get into trouble we need to know the truth" So here it is: "Well, I went up there and walked on the porch to pet the cats...I was playing with the kittens when I felt something....I got scared and then Daddy pulled up". So what actually took place was that Mr. Gage, who may have been jumping around or bumped the door? accidently set the alarm off(which he felt), he did see a white truck go down the road but when his Daddy showed up, that was the question asked, "did you see any cars or anything?" so this time he accidently called the cops without knowing it because he wanted to play with the cats. He may have a record before he hits puberty. Oh do these kids keep me busy or what? School starts back in 22 days!(not that I'm counting down or anything)

Experience Books
Back when the kids were younger we did what is known as experience books in the AVT world. Granted, I didn't do many, since my talents do not fall under the crafty category. But I at least took the photos. Whether I used them in an actual book or not didn't really matter. What did matter is that we used them to discuss past events, future events if we were returning to a known place such as a grocery store, and for language development and simple vocabulary. Above are examples of what I might photo. If my battery had not ran down I would have photographed her crossing the road or parking lot when we left the store, or maybe choosing her favorite fruit, or even organizing the items in our cart(she like to keep all the cold items together, etc). But I did manage to get her playing on the metal flatbed carts that were sizzling out in the sun that this particular store had, and her choosing the shopping cart and the huge pile of groceries we had to put into the cupboards when we returned and put new batteries into the camera. I could describe from the photo of pudding what "buying in bulk" is and use words like "packaged" and "cardboard" and introduce other new vocab words. I used to put these photos when they were younger into the cheap little photo albums that are usually plastic, stick them in my purse and change them out so we have lots to discuss while she would ride in the shopping cart, wait at a doctor's office, anytime we had a few minutes to kill.

Patience
This is something I need more of to be honest. But tonight my sweet daughter got out of the shower, I asked her what she wanted for her "final snack" as I do every night before bed and she tells me..."it's in the freezer". As an AVT mom always does, I play dumb (knowing she wants the new ice cream) and ask "what?". Keep in mind she doesn't have her processors on so she repeats "FREEZER!!!" I shake my head yes asking again "what in the freezer?" and she takes my hand, places it on her neck and says "freeeeeezzzzzeeeer" so maybe I could understand her better. Oh, and despite how terrible I thought my day was....I was reminded how wonderful it actually was.
And in case you forgot, this is where she learned that little trick.

AVT clinic
The Alabama Ear Institute sponsers a mentoring program for up and coming AVTs. Each summer they bring in these aspiring AVTs to do training modules for one week, and then perform live therapy sessions the following week in which the student AVTs are then graded by the certified therapists. Each year we are asked to bring the kids in for a "therapy" session. Brook was happy to see the kitchen (so domestic) and Gage was glad to see the chalk board he could draw on. I recruited my dad who recently retired (oh, I bet he regrets that on a day like today! haha)and he's not very experienced with the actual therapy itself. I told him prior to going in that they were students learning to teach kids like mine, and that's basically it. We went our seperate ways...I with Brook and he with Gage and when "class" was out an hour later he could be found sprinting down the hall to freedom. He exclaimed "they made me work in there, they asked me questions and made me do it all too!!" Woops, forgot to mention that AVT requires participation from the adults too. Oh well, he came smarter than he went in I guess and he also noted that Gage could read a whole lot better than he expected. Um, wonder if he'll go with me next year?

I feel like a sunflower...
...at least one of my sunflowers. Are they supposed to grow from a single stalk and sprout off in this many directions? Well, that's how I've been lately. I'm finishing up some projects and as they come to a close I'm always frantically searching for the next thing to begin. Right now I'm in many different directions but thank goodness, my kids keep me in line! Brook is now in charge of picking what little is growing in our garden and putting them into her orange shirt with matching blue pants...(haha, I'm so bad).
While at the garden I hear the tractor in the background and what used to be a pointing to the ear with a "gggg" for a learning to listen sound...is now a "hey, there's Peanut...HEY PEANUT!!! Can I ride in your tractor?" from one of the kids.
oh how things progress, so slow at first, with one sound and then another...next thing you know they're screaming...but with words! and I never imagined a tractor could mean so much...you AVT mamas know what I'm talkin' 'bout!
P.S. I'm trying to keep up w/ Loudest House we have two of B's processors out for repairs and one of the backups took a swim. She said it was slow, then confessed that "it may have easily fell in the pool by accident"...she uses easily excessively now. Anyway we are using one while the other is in dry n store.
You've Got Mail
Yes we do!! We hit the jackpot today, not only did the new medical bracelets arrive (waterproof, love them), but so did our new book! Another clever one from those girls at Deaf Village, Elizabeth and Rachel.

I Heard It Thru the Grapevine
I was sneaking up on Brook today (love the outfit!)as she was helping herself to some grapes...and she all of a sudden turns and starts running towards the house. She sees me and says "oh Mama, I don't want that four wheeler to get me!"
I pause, I listen, and far off in the distance I hear a fourwheeler on another road! How's that for learning to listen? I always tell my kids to come back up to the house when they hear a car coming if they are at the grapevines because they are kinda close to the rode. Safety first!

I'm Never ever ever ever comin' back!
We sat on the porch today listening to the heavy rain (enjoying every minute, since it's been so long since we've seen this) Gage even got chilly and got himself a little blanket...you would have never guessed that he was about to run away from home.
But he did! It only lasted about twelve seconds, I caught it w/my camera (of course!) but Mr. Bad Mood Blakely, got a little upset when he had the brilliant idea to take his bike and ride in mud puddles and he lost control of his bike. Good thing their processors are water resistent huh?

1...2...3
1.) Got my Deaf Village Tshirt, I was so excited!! got a button too!
2.) Went to the park to today to play with our friend "S". She is also deaf and wears one ci. She's quite fluent in sign, she's nine and she speaks very well also.
3.) Brook got her certificate for her first haircut!!! I know, I know, most kids get this like age one. But hey, this has been a struggle. It's not easy getting her to remove her processors so strangers can stand over her with a pair of scissors. Today, with no prior planning, I just decided to stop in and try to get both kids' hair cut...it worked. I don't think I'll have any problems getting her to return either, she loves her short hair!

The Therapist
When I look at this photo, I realize it was a time of struggle. Though you could NEVER see it on their faces...I'm sure there were a few times I didn't wear it well. Gage was three and was receiving very little benefit from the rather large aids and fm system you see him in. I only had one deaf child at the time...or did I? I had a child who wanted to only use his voice to communicate but he could not hear his own troubled speech. As my family drew in closer and closer to him to understand the words he spoke, he drew closer to us. He learned that my dimples meant I was happy, and the deep wrinkle between my brows meant sadness or anger. I could be so tired from a lack of sleep but still spend almost all waking hours doing mommy therapy with him. My voice could crack as I'd be on the verge of tears from shear exhaustion, but he would never hear it.
Less than a year after this photo was taken he received a cochlear implant. He had aggressive AVT therapy and continued w/our SLP who had been with us since he was four months old. We'll call her Ms. T . Though she didn't wear the heavy gold chains or the mohawk that Mr. T wore, we would have loved her the same if she had. She's showed up a doctor's appointments when Gage had to get blood drawn for one reason or another, just to sit out in the waiting room w/Brook so I could have my hands free for him. She went to numerous audiology and ENT appointments to learn more about cochlear implants, when he was approved for yet another surgery. Ms T, has really been much more than an SLP, she's been helping the mentally ill for years. Though that's not where her degree lies, she's had plenty of on the job training w/me. She's went well beyond her call of duty as an SLP to help the parents as well, in such a trying time. She's accepted my seven am phone calls, and I have accepted her late night eight pm phone calls (after that I'm in the bed! she knows that!)**grin** She's been such a terrific therapist to both of my kids, but most of all, she taught me how to become a "speech therapist mom". She's made me laugh when the school calls to tell me my beautiful four year old daughter has been shooting birds at school. She was the first to sign me up to give a speech to her college level speech class she teaches when I told her I wanted to volunteer more (I mean charity begins at home right?)...
She helped teach my kids to speak, and I will forever be grateful. She didn't however teach them to stop, and she will never be forgiven **but that's a good thing** So here's to you Ms. T! Happy Birthday!!! And I asked Brook this question... "If you could buy Ms.T anything for her birthday and money didn't matter, what would you buy her?" ...her response "a real baby!!" and Gage's response to the same question? "I'd buy her a 4x4 Bronco"

Sounds of Summer
I walk outside this morning and to my surprise, I hear a low, soft humming noise...or was it buzzing? I first thought it was a propeller airplane since we live near a very rural airport...maybe even a helicopter. Hmmm, what was that noise, so who do ask? My two professionally trained listeners.... Gage says "It's bugs!" with a disappointed look on his face (like I should have known the answer). I look on the ground, I look in the sky, I look all around and sure enough, it's thousands, and thousands of June Bugs. There were so many, I thought they had been sent her to lift the entire property up to the sky and relocate the family farmland. Instead, I assume they are just visiting our pecan trees, our peach trees, our grapevines, and our garden. They might as well, w/practically no rain, they are providing us with vegetation anyway.

Fireworks and Fashion
this can't be safe, but they made a rocket launcher...
Right in the middle of the fireworks, I hear "DARN IT!! my battery is dead!" so I ran inside to retrieve Gage a new battery and he was back to hearing the fireworks and that kept him busy for hours!
I Didn't get a chance to talk to Gage about his choices in fashion (see above rubber boots, w/swimsuit)but I did talk to Brook, and LOOK WHAT HAPPENED!! She falls hard but she's fine, not even a scratch...I think I'll wait a while longer before I press the issue. Here she's talking about the turtle they found in this video.

the Right Ammo
Look at Jodi's new post if you haven't already, good good news over in Italy.
Just goes to show you that if you pack the right ammunition, you may not need an army. Giving parents the right tools to begin with will go a long way. And hey, once you're fully armed, make sure your kids are too! My kids are packin' are yours?
Educate yourselves, I found that the best information is from the other parents in similar situations, too bad it wasn't until last year that I found these resources! Our clinic offers parent referrals now for their ci candidates. I would have loved to swap emails with someone when we first started out. But, hey, the parents these days can talk to parents of ci kiddos or even teenage ci users. Happy 4th of July!
p.s. let's not get into the fashion, I promise I will make an attempt soon! Individually, those items are cute.
