Sorry so short but tonight I noticed something...it's been like 6 months since we started closed captioning on our tv. Well tonight I had him watch a different tv (we never use) couldn't find the remote to turn on closed caption after he requested it...so we moved him back to the family tv so he could read/watch. He stated he really needed it.
After that, he gets a shower and goes to bed, then calls me back in there to tell me he needs his processor, he needs to hear it too. He was tired and I don't think he wanted to rely on reading Spongebob, so he needs both. Until Brook learns to read well, we won't know w/her, but for now she just listens, and she's bilateral while he's unilateral. I'm thinking that may make a difference. Either way, doesn't matter to us, but I need to add that to his IEP next year, "no movies/shows, w/out cc"!!!

You know, that last line just reminded me how I sat in class for years watching those stupid educational films and they were NEVER captioned...
Gage and Brooke reading skills will probably surpass their peers in a few years time!
I have a moderate hearing loss in both ears and wear a hearing aid in each ear. I grew up with a tv without captions and seemed to cope fine. However, in the years since I've had a tv with caption ability, I've noticed that I generally don't watch shows with out captions. In the rare occasions where captions haven't been available, I've noticed that it really takes a lot of effort on my part to follow what is happening. And the volume goes up a fair bit too!
I'm very lucky that I have a wonderful and understanding boyfriend who doesn't mind pausing shows and relaying what was said during the times I have no hope of understanding what was said!
abbie that is deafinitely true my reading skills became so well because i read cc all the time.. like today i just got a dvd from a deaf school for free bc i volunteered and it saids CC i put it on my tv and it doesnt work and i cant watch it without cc. So i have to find there email. Also i had same problem when i was in college for 4 yrs i requested it it was on my accomdation letter and the teachers forgot to give them to my conselour who puts cc on the vhs so at time my eng teacher told me not to show up to class bc she forgot to give it to my conselour so i got credit for the day but i had to buy it at blockbuster to watch the movie.
I need my closed caption too. I tend to want to just read the television and not focus on the sound. At night, I don't want to spend the time.
And yes those educational junk is never Captioned. I don't show them to my class unless they are.
sunday is my catch up on blog day... yes do include the cc on the iep. it was the Hi admin that actually did that for andrew originally and told me to do that always. (of course that is contraversial but if they need it you do it!) and then you will have to check to make sure it is done or have Gage speak up because they probably won't at least some of the time- in assemblies and such. ditto w/ FMs if used in school. you'd think they'd do it but sometimes teachers 'don't like it.'
