Patient Big Brother

Before you hit play let me explain...both are deaf and swim w/out their cochlear implant processors. He is a skilled lip reader and she is not. Good thing she's liking sign right? He can be very patient when he wants to be.

That's so sweet to see them playing like that. He IS patient. I just wanted to add I thought Brooke did just fine lipreading too.

You can't see s's on the lips. Go look in the mirror and try it. You have to guess or fill in the blanks and that's real hard! Especially when you don't know how to read. (smile)

This is why I believe ASL comes in handy. Thanks for showing the video. You have cute kids.

I am so glad you captured that on video! What a fantastic big brother Gage is!!! So patient and I love when he takes Brooke's arm up against his throat to let her feel the words.
Way to go Mom~ you have two wonderful children!!!

I remembered a post about swimming with CI on, I think it was Kokonut Pundit's....found it from youtube. Could try that for your kids.

Lane, showed my kids that before the beach, and they were not even remotely interested. I think they enjoy their little hearing breaks. Either that or they don't want to risk destroying them...?

Ah I see, alright. Haven't tried it myself....I know I'll look funny in a swim cap so I won't.

I love it, they are too cute!! We have the same pool and when Atiana is in the pool with her brothers, she always puts her hand on their throats when lip reading doesn't work. It's so funny, sometimes, I will see them grab her hand and put it on their throats for her. Then, they talk really slow. She's never put her own hand to her own throat before...great idea. :)Gage just wanted to make sure he got it perfect for her.

Aww.. I know I have said how so adorable they are before but really they are so adorable! They are being great brother and sister to each other.

Great job to get it on video, perfect timing!! Ok now, can I jump in the pool?! Please?! :-)

I can't even spell my own child's name right..long day! It's "Ariana", not "Atiana", lol

That is a gorgeous video. Gage really is patient, but I guess the ending shows that even patience has its limits!

It's nice to see he has time for his sister and really cares about her.

Oh how sweet of him!! So very very patient!! I remember those days too, when I had to take my HA's out to go swimming and would have an awful time lipreading a friend of mine who had a very heavy German accent.

That is a GREAT video! Gage is such a great big brother to Brooke! It brought tears to my eyes seeing him put her hand to his neck ... Mike will do this with Aiden a lot and now there are times when Aiden will automatically reach up and touch Mike's neck. We haven't learned anything about this, but seeing your video ... WOW ... your kids touch my heart!

This is so cute. I see that Brooke spell O and Gage making movements with his fingers

Perhaps it may be easier if Gage learns manual alphabet so if Brooke keeps not understanding him, he can spell the word... for her sake since she cannot lipread. Being in AL, the kids probably will spend a lot of time in the pool :)

How adorable they were in the pool trying to communicate without their CI on. This is something it reminded of my brother and myself when we were young kids trying to communicate and we would use hand signals and lipreading. Of course, we were expert in lipreading.

Gage has a very tough time w/sign, maybe he'd do better if he knew that it would help them communicate when swimming but I honestly have tried for years w/him. He gestures but signing just isn't very natural for him. Brook on the other hand likes learning the signs for the ABCs. She can do them w/ease w/just a little practice. We are still working on that though. Gage tends to be a little better receptively w/signs, I can throw up a "K" since you can't read that sound...and he understands it , but ask him to show you the letter K, and that's a different ballgame.

boys tend to have poorer fine motor skills than girls. maybe if he practices fingerspelling (and is motivate to do so to interact better with brook) it will improve his fine motor development. just a thought.

also, i'm impressed that even though your family is committed to all the hard work of CI and AVT, you are also open to signing. way to build up that communication toolbox!

He really is patient with her! Most little boys I know get obnoxious but he has got some mannerisms :)
